Sherry trifle recipe

Louisa says "When I was growing up, mum

had a sherry trifle recipe for special occasions. This was my favorite dessert."

I loved the taste of the sherry soaked into the sponge and delicious smooth homemade custard.

We always had red and green jelly at Christmas, it looked really pretty, and lots of whipped cream on top.

I did not realize until much later, that our family had a fruitless trifle recipe.

I thought that was how it was made!

Mum didn’t put fruit in, because my Dad did not like it, and that is how his Italian Grandmother and sisters made it.

Also, when I had trifle at my Italian Aunts – no fruit!- What was a girl to think!

No stale cake? Use swiss roll

When my hubby and I first met, he made me an English trifle - and it had fruit in the bottom!

I hurt his feelings, by saying – this isn’t how you make trifle!!!!

When I realized that our family way was not correct - I felt really bad for putting down his traditional trifle recipe!

It was very nice apart from the fruit.

Well, you learn something new every day!

I must admit, I still like it without the fruit! – and so does hubby now! Funny what you get used to.

He also likes to tell me that it is yet another left-over recipe, to use up stale cake.

But nowadays there's no such thing - home-made cakes disappear the same day, and ones from the bakery or supermarket are full of preservatives.

As I found out, there are many ways to make a trifle, so this is our family recipe.
