Savoury Pie

How do I make a savoury pie? Everyone

can make a home made apple-pie - right? Worst case, all you need to do is buy a frozen pie-crust and a can of apple pie filling! You can make a peach pie too, and.....

But how about a chicken pie, or a steak pie? The frozen pie crust is still good, or you can make your own. Short or puff pastry sheets from your freezer are another alternative.

For the filling, use any beef stew or chunky soup, curry, chili, or a chicken dish you normally serve as is. This can be prepared specially, or made from the unused portion of a previous meal, which you stored in the freezer. You may need to thicken the liquid with a little cornflour or cornstarch to suit a pie.

If the quantity is not quite sufficient, try adding some frozen peas, or corn. Alternatively, a smaller pie makes a great light lunch, or first course for a dinner party, served with relish or chutney.

pie ready for the oven

Ready for the oven!

Just throw in the required amount, make slits in the pastry lid, brush with milk or beaten egg and put it in the pre-heated oven. Use the pastry cooking temperature and time recommended, usually a hot oven, and 30 minutes to make sure the meat is heated sufficiently.
