Ration book

Instant cooking

Our idea of instant cooking is

perhaps not the same as yours! This is just a collection of quick snacks or even main courses of the 'open a can' variety. Some of them you probably use (or have rejected) already.

There can't be many individuals, or families, any more, who have a fully prepared dish every mealtime. The freezer and microwave oven have taken over a lot of the cooking tasks.

However the freezer isn’t only for prepared meals from the supermarket, you can freeze your own meals, (and leftovers) too.

Maybe we can help out in the different idea department.

You probably have a repertoire of such ideas yourself, but perhaps our suggestions will trigger off a different way of serving a particular dish.

Anything to relieve the monotony!

rations for a week

WW2 family weekly rations -
tea, sugar, bacon, and fats

My Mother, having lived through the depression, two world wars, and the austere years in the '40s, was an expert at rustling up something appetising from next to nothing.

Although I didn't realise it at the time, I picked up several ideas just from being there while she was cooking. In a similar way to the things I understand about gardening, from being around my Dad, when he was working as Head Gardener at stately homes.

My mother gave me a tip, which is good for my favorite food - leftovers! It is just as good freshly prepared, though!

We look at this on the next page.
