More favourite cookbooks

Another favorite group of cookbooks

is those left over from WW2 and the austere years following. Where I was brought up, in Yorkshire, England, everything was rationed.

The meagre ration of, for example, 2 ozs of butter per week, was not even available in the grocery store. If they did get something in to sell, word quickly passed around, and the line stretched out of the shop and down the street. I had my first banana when I was nine years old.

This was when the there really were
"Desperate Housewives"!

Desperate Housewives cookery

Sugar was a very rare commodity, and so no candy or chocolate was available for many years. We would buy an Oxo beef cube for one penny instead. It was so salty, you could only take a tiny pinch at one go. Made it last longer, though! Eggs came in packets of dried powder, when you could get it, as did milk.

This climate made for some very interesting adaptations as you may imagine. The standard way of assessing the capabilities of a cook was how she (always she in those days) performed, baking an eggless cake!

All this is by way of an introduction, we have some favorite goodies from our various sources, and thought you may be interested in trying them.

The recipes mostly fall into the traditional, or handed down, category with the occasional extra collected on our travels.

As you may understand from the above, we aren't going for precise measurements, but will try to offer hints to what to expect at different stages.

Our 'cuisine' is Anglo-saxon and Italian based, but we have lived 'on the economy' in a couple of different places, and picked up a few different influences.
